Different business climate, new imperatives for IT
The banks may be getting the headlines but business leaders across nearly all sectors are making deep cuts in response to worsening trading conditions. Unprecedented pressure like this attacks weak spots, eroding relationships and trust and IT leaders must be strong in the face of the impossible demands being generated. If the current team has been carrying passengers in the good times, they are unlikely to flourish in the tough times ahead. CEOs are a lot less willing to put up with weakness when the pressure is on and the time to act is squeezed. CIOs need to strengthen their top team's leadership profile in readiness for when the heat is really on later in the year, but they need to act now. Our pre-crash experience is that CIOs are usually reluctant to take action to strengthen a team they have built themselves. Now it's becoming a must: "When the going gets tough, the board gets brutal" goes the saying, and CIOs need to act before somebody else does it for them.
