Our Non-Executive Director Practice recruits Non-Executive Directors and Chairmen for the boards of public, private, family owned and private equity backed businesses.

For over 60 years Boyden has advised Chairmen, CEOs and board members on strengthening board structure, improving performance and corporate governance. We are a leader in board level search and have a track record that has been built over many years. Our board searches are performed by our most experienced consultants and often cover several industry segments and sometimes different countries.

Recent corporate governance reforms have had a major impact in the boardroom and have increased the challenge of recruiting independent directors. Boyden maintains regular contact with a very significant number of non-executive directors and maintains up to date knowledge of their skills and availability.

We are also constantly on the look out for new talent in order to extend the pool that is available.
We work with many executives pluralist non-executive career and offer them advice and guidance in this aim. Boyden also runs briefings and networking events for nonexecutives.

Modus operandi
At Boyden, we work closely with the Chairman and existing board members to determine the ideal make up of the board and the ideal profile of new members in order to maximise value for the shareholders.

We understand the importance of chemistry fit among board members but we often challenge and believe that diversity of membership can often improve performance.

Briefing – we invest significant time at the start of an assignment to meet with our clients’ teams and to understand the company, its strategic aims and its culture.

Job specification – we prepare a detailed job specification/ candidate briefing document. This ensures that both parties are clear on the background, skills and experience required and the opportunity is presented appropriately

Research – our dedicated research team has access to up to date information on a substantial number of non-executives, however, we always conduct fresh research for each assignment

Long-list – we aim to discuss a long-list of candidates with our clients within three weeks of starting a project. This is very helpful in understanding preferences and identifying areas to explore further at interview

Interviews – all candidates are interviewed in person by the partner leading the search. Interviews are not delegated to research or support staff

Shortlist – a typical shortlist will consist of between three and five candidates and will usually be presented within three to four weeks from the long-list meeting.

Each candidate will be presented with a full CV and an appraisal from the Boyden consultant

Contract – we can assist with all aspects of contract negotiation in order to ensure a successful conclusion

Follow up – we stay in touch with the client and successful candidate to ensure a successful integration into the business

Timescales – a typical assignment takes 6-8 weeks from start to shortlist

Flexibility – we appreciate that every client is different and that every requirement is different.
We will always listen to what is important to our clients and, where appropriate, tailor our service according to specific needs.
